Berkery was born in Tokyo to a Irish father and a Japanese mother, and from age one he began a very global upbringing. He lived in the US until he was eight, then Japan until 14 and since then until now he has been living in Ireland. His childhood split up in this way between such culturally different countries has had a massive affect on how Shane sees the world and himself in it. He has gained a very wide breadth of perspective from living through the social, visual and linguistic cultures of each place, and this has given him a unique framework to build his artistic vision upon. His experience has been perpetually coloured by both the feeling of belonging while also being an outsider, and so his own sense of identity has been a precarious one. He feels that his paintings are an embodiment of this sensation; fragmented yet unified.
